Common mistakes

  • ✗ Dado es tarde, me voy.✓ Dado que es tarde, me voy. Before a clause dado needs que. English “given that” keeps its “that”, which learners drop in Spanish.
  • ✗ De ahí que es difícil.✓ De ahí que sea difícil.De ahí que introduces a consequence and takes the subjunctive. English “hence it is difficult” uses a plain indicative.
  • ✗ Puesto es tarde, me voy.✓ Puesto que es tarde, me voy.Puesto que means “since”, and the que cannot be dropped, just as in dado que.
  • ✗ Por consiguientes, no iré.✓ Por consiguiente, no iré.The connector is a fixed phrase and never takes an -s. English “consequently” suggests it is an adverb form that can be changed.
  • ✗ Lo explico a fin de que entiendes.✓ Lo explico a fin de que entiendas.A fin de que expresses purpose and takes the subjunctive. English “so that you understand” has no mood.
