Infinitive constructions: al, de, con, a

A preposition + infinitive can replace a whole subordinate clause. These constructions are compact and typical of good written Spanish.

constructionmeaningexample
al + inf.when, as (simultaneous)Al salir de casa, vi a Pedro.
de + inf.if (conditional)De haberlo sabido, no habría venido.
con + inf.although / just byCon estudiar un poco, apruebas.

por + inf.because of / still to be doneLo multaron por correr. Quedan cosas por hacer.

Notes

  • The infinitive can have its own subject after it: Al llegar el tren, todos subieron.
  • de + compound infinitive expresses past unreal conditions: De haber llegado antes, lo habrías visto.
  • por + inf. after a noun = pending: un problema por resolver.

Examples

  • Al entrar, apaga la alarma. When you come in, switch off the alarm.
  • De seguir así, perderemos al cliente. If we carry on like this, we’ll lose the client.
  • Con decirle la verdad, basta.Just telling him the truth is enough.
  • Aún quedan tres capítulos por leer. There are still three chapters left to read.
  • Al salir, cierra con llave. When leaving, lock the door.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Al llegó, me llamó.✓ Al llegar, me llamó.Al is followed by an infinitive. English “on arriving” has -ing or a full clause, so the verb gets conjugated.
  • ✗ De tendría tiempo, iría.✓ De tener tiempo, iría.De + infinitive replaces a si clause. The conditional cannot follow de.
  • ✗ Sin sabiendo nada, habló.✓ Sin saber nada, habló.English “without knowing” uses -ing after a preposition. Spanish uses the infinitive, never the gerund.
  • ✗ Antes de llegando, comió.✓ Antes de llegar, comió.The same rule holds after any preposition: antes de, después de, para, sin take the infinitive.
  • ✗ Después de comiendo, salió.✓ Después de comer, salió.English “after eating” has -ing, so the Spanish gerund looks right. Use the infinitive.
