Simple future (futuro simple)

The simple future adds one set of endings to the whole infinitive, for all three verb groups: hablaré, comeré, viviré.

endingsexample
yo-éhablaré
tú-áscomerás
él / ella / usted-ávivirá
nosotros-emoshablaremos
vosotros-éiscomeréis
ellos / ustedes-ánvivirán

Irregular stems (same endings)

  • Lose a vowel: poder → podr-, saber → sabr-, querer → querr-, haber → habr-.
  • Add d: tener → tendr-, poner → pondr-, salir → saldr-, venir → vendr-.
  • Special: hacer → har-, decir → dir-.

Uses

  • Predictions and promises: Mañana lloverá. Te llamaré.
  • Guesses about the present: ¿Dónde está Ana? — Estará en casa (she’s probably at home).
  • For plans, ir a + infinitive is more common in speech.

Examples

  • El año que viene viviré en Barcelona.Next year I’ll live in Barcelona.
  • No te preocupes, tendremos tiempo.Don’t worry, we’ll have time.
  • ¿Qué hora será?I wonder what time it is.
  • Te lo diré mañana.I’ll tell you tomorrow.
  • Mañana hará frío.Tomorrow it will be cold.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Hablarè mañana.✓ Hablaré mañana. The future ending carries an acute accent (é). Spanish has no grave accent, which English speakers may know from French.
  • ✗ Haceré la tarea.✓ Haré la tarea.Hacer has the irregular future stem har-. The regular endings are added to this shortened stem, as in English “will do”.
  • ✗ Poneré la mesa.✓ Pondré la mesa.Poner inserts a d in the future stem: pondr-. The same happens in tendr-, vendr- and saldr-.
  • ✗ Tenerás tiempo.✓ Tendrás tiempo.Tener loses its e and adds d: tendr-. The regular ending -ás is then added, just as -é is added in tendré.
  • ✗ Mañana voy a iré a Madrid.✓ Mañana iré a Madrid.ir a + infinitive and the future are two separate ways to talk about tomorrow. Mixing them is like saying “going to will go”.
