estar + gerund (present continuous)
estar + gerund describes an action in progress right now: Estoy leyendo = I’m reading.
| verb type | gerund | example |
|---|---|---|
| -ar | -ando | hablar → hablando |
| -er / -ir | -iendo | comer → comiendo, vivir → viviendo |
| vowel + -er/-ir | -yendo | leer → leyendo, oír → oyendo, ir → yendo |
| -ir stem change | e → i, o → u | pedir → pidiendo, dormir → durmiendo, decir → diciendo |
Notes
- Use it less than English: for habits and the future, Spanish uses the simple present. Mañana trabajo (not estoy trabajando).
- Works in other tenses: Estaba duchándome cuando llamaste.
- seguir / continuar + gerund = keep on doing: Sigo viviendo en Lviv.
- llevar + time + gerund = have been doing: Llevo dos años estudiando español.
Examples
- ¿Qué estás haciendo?What are you doing?
- Estamos esperando el autobús.We’re waiting for the bus.
- Los niños están durmiendo. The children are sleeping.
- Sigue lloviendo.It’s still raining.
- Mi padre está cocinando una paella. My father is cooking a paella.
Common mistakes
- ✗ Soy hablando.✓ Estoy hablando. The continuous tense uses estar, never ser. English “I am speaking” uses the same verb as “I am tired”.
- ✗ Estoy hablar.✓ Estoy hablando.Estar is followed by the gerund in -ando or -iendo, not by the infinitive.
- ✗ Estoy comendo.✓ Estoy comiendo. The gerund of -er and -ir verbs ends in -iendo, not -endo.
- ✗ Estoy leiendo.✓ Estoy leyendo. After a vowel -iendo becomes -yendo: leyendo, oyendo, creyendo.
- ✗ Estoy dormiendo.✓ Estoy durmiendo.Stem-changing -ir verbs also change in the gerund: o becomes u.
