Common mistakes

  • ✗ Porqué estoy cansado.✓ Porque estoy cansado. In one word with no accent, porque means “because”. English has the same distinction in “why” and “because”, so learners confuse the spelling.
  • ✗ Como que estoy cansado, me voy.✓ Como estoy cansado, me voy.Como at the start means “since”; no que is added. English “since” stands on its own.
  • ✗ No es rojo, pero azul.✓ No es rojo, sino azul. After a negative, “but rather” is sino. English uses “but” for both, so pero is the default choice.
  • ✗ Tengo hambre asi que como.✓ Tengo hambre, así que como.Así needs an accent and the connector is preceded by a comma. English “so” has neither.
  • ✗ Aunque estoy cansado, pero voy.✓ Aunque estoy cansado, voy.Aunque already expresses contrast, so pero is redundant. English “although … but” would also be doubled.
