Emphasis: es … quien, lo que … es

Cleft sentences split a sentence to focus on one part. They are very common in Spanish for contrast and correction.

focus onstructureexample
a personser + person + quien / el queFue Ana quien lo dijo.
a thinglo que + verb + ser + thingLo que necesito es dormir.
a placeser + place + dondeEs aquí donde nos conocimos.
a timeser + time + cuandoFue entonces cuando lo entendí.
a mannerser + manner + comoEs así como se hace.

Agreement

  • ser matches the tense of the main verb: Fue él quien llamó. Es él quien llama.
  • ser agrees with a plural focus: Son mis padres los que deciden.
  • With a pronoun, the verb can agree with it: Fui yo quien lo hice / quien lo hizo (both correct).

Examples

  • No fui yo quien rompió el jarrón, fue el gato.It wasn’t me who broke the vase, it was the cat.
  • Lo que más me preocupa es el precio. What worries me most is the price.
  • Fue en 2015 cuando se mudaron. It was in 2015 that they moved.
  • Es por eso por lo que te llamé.That’s why I called you.
  • Es en verano cuando hace más calor. It is in summer that it is hottest.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Es yo quien lo hizo.✓ Soy yo quien lo hizo. The verb agrees with the person who is emphasised. English “It is I who” keeps “is” for everyone.
  • ✗ Lo que quiero ser descansar.✓ Lo que quiero es descansar. The two halves of the cleft are joined by es. Ser is the wrong verb because the sentence says what I want, not what I am.
  • ✗ Es aquí quien vivo.✓ Es aquí donde vivo.A place is focused with donde, not quien, which is only for people. English “It is here that I live” uses “that” for everything.
  • ✗ Quien llegó fue yo.✓ Quien llegó fui yo.The second verb agrees with the person: fui. English “The one who arrived was me” puts “was” after a singular subject.
  • ✗ Fue ayer donde llegó.✓ Fue ayer cuando llegó.Time is focused with cuando and place with donde. English “It was yesterday that” does not make the difference visible.
