Fine nuances of the subjunctive
At C2, the choice between indicative, Konjunktiv I and Konjunktiv II communicates your attitude to what you report, and how cautious or polite you want to sound.
| sentence | what the speaker signals |
|---|---|
| Er sagt, er ist krank. | neutral, probably accepts it |
| Er sagt, er sei krank. | formal, neutral report |
| Er sagt, er wäre krank. | doubt, distance |
Konjunktiv II for softening
- Opinions: Ich würde sagen, … / Ich hätte gedacht, …
- Estimates: Das dürfte reichen. Es müsste klappen.
- Criticism: Das hätte man besser lösen können.
- Corrections: Ich wäre mir da nicht so sicher.
Examples
- Er behauptet, er wäre zu Hause gewesen. He claims he was at home (and I doubt it).
- Ich würde sagen, das reicht.I’d say that’s enough.
- Das dürfte kein Problem sein. That shouldn’t be a problem.
- Ich hätte da noch eine Frage.I’d have one more question.
- So wäre es vielleicht besser. That might be better.
Common mistakes
- ✗ Ich will sagen, das ist zu teuer.✓ Ich würde sagen, das ist zu teuer.English “I’d say” softens an opinion, and German uses würde for that. Ich will sagen means “I want to say”.
- ✗ Das dürft genug sein.✓ Das dürfte genug sein. For a cautious estimate German uses the Konjunktiv dürfte. Dürft is the present ihr form.
- ✗ Das hätte man besser lösen gekonnt.✓ Das hätte man besser lösen können. With a second verb the modal stays an infinitive: lösen können, as in all double-infinitive forms.
- ✗ Ich wäre mich da nicht so sicher.✓ Ich wäre mir da nicht so sicher.Sich sicher sein takes a dative reflexive: ich bin mir sicher, ich wäre mir nicht sicher.
- ✗ Ich würde gedacht haben, dass es länger dauert.✓ Ich hätte gedacht, dass es länger dauert.English “I would have thought” suggests würde, but German builds the past Konjunktiv with hätte + participle.
