Stative passive (ist geöffnet)
German distinguishes the process of an action from its result. The process passive uses werden; the result (state) uses sein + participle. This is the Zustandspassiv.
| process (werden) | result (sein) |
|---|---|
| Die Tür wird geöffnet. (someone is opening it) | Die Tür ist geöffnet. (it is open) |
| Der Tisch wird reserviert. | Der Tisch ist reserviert. |
| Die Rechnung wurde bezahlt. | Die Rechnung war bezahlt. |

Common mistakes
- ✗ Das Geschäft wird montags geschlossen. (es ist zu)✓ Das Geschäft ist montags geschlossen.English “the shop is closed” describes a state, and so does German sein + participle. Wird geschlossen would mean someone is closing it.
- ✗ Das Konto ist gesperrt geworden.✓ Das Konto ist gesperrt.A result is just sein + participle: das Konto ist gesperrt. Geworden belongs to werden as “become” and does not fit here.
- ✗ Alles ist erledigen.✓ Alles ist erledigt. The stative passive uses the participle, not the infinitive: alles ist erledigt.
- ✗ Die Tür ist geöffnet von meinem Kollegen.✓ Die Tür wurde von meinem Kollegen geöffnet. When you name who did it, you describe the action, not the state, so German needs the werden passive: wurde … geöffnet.
- ✗ Rauchen wird verboten.✓ Rauchen ist verboten.A sign or rule describes a state, so German uses sein: Rauchen ist verboten. Wird verboten means it is being banned now.
