Comparisons with als ob

als ob / als wenn (as if) introduce an unreal comparison: something seems a certain way, but probably isn’t. They are followed by Konjunktiv II (sometimes Konjunktiv I in writing).

formexample

Typical introductions

  • aussehen, als ob … (to look as if)
  • sich anhören / klingen, als ob … (to sound as if)
  • Es kommt mir vor, als ob … (it seems to me as if)
  • Past: als ob + hätte / wäre + participle: als ob nichts passiert wäre.

Examples

He acts as if he knew nothing.
  • Sie sieht aus, als wäre sie müde.She looks as if she were tired.

The child behaves as if he were the boss.

Common mistakes

With ob the verb goes to the end; only the short form without ob puts it first (als wäre sie müde). Mixing the two is wrong.
English can say “like he knew nothing”, but German unreal comparisons need als (or als ob), not wie.
Passieren forms its past with sein, so the Konjunktiv past is passiert wäre, not hätte.
English writes “as if” without a comma, but German separates the als ob clause with a comma.
In the short form without ob, the verb comes straight after als: als wäre er der Chef.
