Common mistakes
- ✗ Es gab einen Stau, folglich ich kam zu spät.✓ Es gab einen Stau, folglich kam ich zu spät.English “consequently, I came” keeps the subject first, but folglich takes position 1, so the verb comes straight after it.
- ✗ Das Hotel ist günstig. Trotzdem liegt es zentral.✓ Das Hotel ist günstig. Außerdem liegt es zentral.Trotzdem signals a contrast, but a central location is a second advantage, so the connector must add: außerdem.
- ✗ Ich trinke keinen Alkohol, sonst trinke ich Saft.✓ Ich trinke keinen Alkohol, stattdessen trinke ich Saft.English “instead” is stattdessen. Sonst means “otherwise” or “or else” and gives the sentence a different meaning.
- ✗ Es regnete, so wir blieben zu Hause.✓ Es regnete, deshalb blieben wir zu Hause.English “so” links cause and result, but German so does not work that way. Use deshalb or deswegen, with the verb straight after.
- ✗ Beeil dich, sonst wir verpassen den Zug.✓ Beeil dich, sonst verpassen wir den Zug.Sonst is an adverb in position 1, so the verb follows it directly: sonst verpassen wir den Zug.
