Складні сполучні засоби (whereas, albeit, nevertheless)
В офіційних текстах вживають точні сполучні засоби. Граматика в них різна: одні поєднують частини речення, інші починають нове речення, після третіх стоїть іменник.

Типові помилки
- ✗ Despite of the rain, we went out.✓ Despite the rain, we went out.Despite вживаємо без of, бо of потрібен лише в in spite of.
- ✗ In spite the rain, we went out.✓ In spite of the rain, we went out.Вираз in spite завжди потребує of: in spite of.
- ✗ Although it was cold, but we went out.✓ Although it was cold, we went out.Although і but разом в одному реченні не вживаємо.
- ✗ Despite he was tired, he came.✓ Although he was tired, he came.Despite вимагає іменника або форми на -ing, а перед підметом із дієсловом вживаємо although.
- ✗ In contrary, I like it.✓ On the contrary, I like it.Усталений вираз для протиставлення — on the contrary.
