A inversão para dar ênfase (Never have I…)

Depois de certas expressões negativas ou restritivas no início da frase, o inglês usa a ordem de pergunta. Soa formal e enfático, como o “Nunca vi tal coisa!” do português, mas com o auxiliar antes do sujeito.

Condicionais sem if

Had I known, I would have come. · Should you need help, call us. · Were it not for you, … O verbo também vem antes do sujeito.

• ✗ Never I have seen such a beautiful beach.✓ Never have I seen such a beautiful beach.O português diz “nunca vi”, mas em inglês, com never no início, o auxiliar vem antes do sujeito: never have I.
• ✗ Not only she won the race, but she also broke the record.✓ Not only did she win the race, but she also broke the record.O português diz “não só ela ganhou”, sem inversão, mas em inglês not only no início pede did + sujeito: did she win.
• ✗ No sooner we had arrived than it started to rain.✓ No sooner had we arrived than it started to rain.Com no sooner no início, had vem antes do sujeito: had we arrived.
• ✗ Only then I understood the problem.✓ Only then did I understand the problem.O português diz “só então eu entendi”, sem inversão; em inglês only then pede a ordem de pergunta: did I understand.
