Present tense: 1st conjugation (читати)
Ukrainian verbs belong to two conjugations. The 1st conjugation has endings with -е- / -є-. Most verbs in -ати, -яти, -іти (читати, гуляти, знати) belong here.
| читати | писати | жити | |
|---|---|---|---|
| я | читаю | пишу | живу |
| ти | читаєш | пишеш | живеш |
| він / вона | читає | пише | живе |
| ми | читаємо | пишемо | живемо |
| ви | читаєте | пишете | живете |
| вони | читають | пишуть | живуть |
Notes
- After a vowel, the endings are -ю, -єш, -є… (читаю); after a consonant -у, -еш, -е… (пишу).
- Some verbs change the stem: писати → пиш-, жити → жив-, могти → мож-.
- Verbs in -увати use -у-: працювати → працюю, працюєш.
Examples
- Я читаю новини щоранку.I read the news every morning.
- Де ти живеш?Where do you live?
- Вона працює в банку.She works at a bank.
- Ми знаємо відповідь.We know the answer.

- ✗ Я пишю листа.✓ Я пишу листа.After a consonant the я ending is -у, and the stem changes to пиш-.
- ✗ Ми працюваємо тут.✓ Ми працюємо тут.Verbs in -увати change to -ю- in the present, a stem change that English work does not have.
- ✗ Вони живеть тут.✓ Вони живуть тут.The вони form of the 1st conjugation ends in -уть after a consonant.
