Past tense
The Ukrainian past tense is easy to form, but it changes by gender and number, not by person: a man says я читав, a woman says я читала.
| ending | читати | бути | |
|---|---|---|---|
| masc. | -в | читав | був |
| fem. | -ла | читала | була |
| neut. | -ло | читало | було |
| plural | -ли | читали | були |
How to form it
- Remove -ти from the infinitive and add the ending: говори-ти → говорив, говорила.
- With ми, ви, вони always -ли: ми читали, ви читали.
- A few verbs drop -в in the masculine: могти → міг (могла), нести → ніс (несла), їсти → їв (їла).
Examples
- Учора я працювала до восьмої.Yesterday I (f.) worked until eight.
- Він жив у Польщі два роки.He lived in Poland for two years.
- Ми були в кіно.We were at the cinema.
- Що сталося?What happened?
- Вона була вдома вчора.She was at home yesterday.
Common mistakes
- ✗ Вона читав книгу.✓ Вона читала книгу.The past tense agrees with the gender of the subject, so a woman needs -ла, which English read never shows.
- ✗ Ми була в театрі.✓ Ми були в театрі.With ми, ви and вони the ending is always -ли.
- ✗ Він могв піти.✓ Він міг піти.Могти has the irregular masculine past міг, with no -в, like English can becoming could.
- ✗ Вчора він нест сумку.✓ Вчора він ніс сумку.Нести has the irregular masculine past ніс, with the vowel changed.
- ✗ Сонце світив.✓ Сонце світило.Сонце is neuter and needs the ending -ло, unlike English shone.
