Imperative (читай!, пишіть!)
The imperative gives instructions and requests. It has a ти form, a ви form (polite or plural) and a ми form (“let’s”).
| ти | ви | ми | |
|---|---|---|---|
| читати (чита-ють) | читай | читайте | читаймо |
| писати (пиш-уть) | пиши | пишіть | пишімо |
| сидіти (сид-ять) | сиди | сидіть | сидімо |
| сісти (ся-дуть) | сядь | сядьте | сядьмо |
| бути | будь | будьте | будьмо |
How to form it
- Take the вони form and remove the ending: чита-ють, пиш-уть.
- Stem ends in a vowel → -й (читай). Consonant → usually -и (пиши).
- Polite requests: add будь ласка, or use давайте + infinitive.
Examples
- Заходьте, будь ласка!Come in, please!
- Напиши мені, коли будеш вільна.Text me when you’re free.
- Не хвилюйтеся, усе буде добре.Don’t worry, everything will be fine.
- Ходімо в кіно!Let’s go to the cinema!
- Скажи мені правду.Tell me the truth.
Common mistakes
- ✗ Читає це!✓ Читай це!The imperative drops the ending and takes -й, not the present tense -є, which English read does not distinguish.
- ✗ Заходить, будь ласка, до кімнати!✓ Заходьте, будь ласка, до кімнати!The polite form ends in -те, and the soft stem keeps ь.
- ✗ Сісти, будь ласка.✓ Сядь, будь ласка.A request uses the imperative сядь, unlike English sit down, which is not an infinitive.
- ✗ Читаєте повільно, діти!✓ Читайте повільно, діти!The ви imperative ends in -йте, and it is not the present tense, unlike English read.
- ✗ Дзвоній мені ввечері.✓ Дзвони мені ввечері.The stem дзвон- is consonant-final, so the imperative is дзвони.
