Verb aspect (робити / зробити)
Most Ukrainian verbs come in pairs: an imperfective verb (process, repetition) and a perfective verb (one completed action, result). Choosing the right one is a key skill.
| imperfective | perfective | how the pair is formed |
|---|---|---|
| робити | зробити | prefix |
| писати | написати | prefix |
| купувати | купити | suffix |
| відповідати | відповісти | suffix / stem |
| брати | взяти | different verb |
| говорити | сказати | different verb |
Which one?
- Process or duration → imperfective: Я довго писав листа.
- Habit, repetition → imperfective: Я щодня купую хліб.
- One finished action, result → perfective: Я написав листа (it’s done).
- Perfective verbs have no present tense: their present forms mean the future (напишу = I will write).
