être and avoir

être (to be) and avoir (to have) are the two most important French verbs. They are irregular, and you will need both later to form the past tense.

Where French uses avoir

  • Age: J’ai 30 ans (I am 30).
  • Feelings and needs: avoir faim (be hungry), soif (thirsty), froid / chaud (cold / hot), peur (afraid), raison (right), besoin de (need).
  • il y a = there is / there are: Il y a un café ici.

Examples

  • Je suis médecin.I am a doctor.
  • Nous sommes à la maison. We are at home.
  • Tu as quel âge ? — J’ai vingt ans.How old are you? — I’m twenty.
  • Ils ont froid. They are cold.
  • Elle a les yeux verts et est très grande. She has green eyes and is very tall.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Je suis 25 ans.✓ J’ai 25 ans.French gives age with avoir, whereas English uses to be.
  • ✗ Je suis froid.✓ J’ai froid.Feeling cold is expressed with avoir, and être froid would mean being cold to the touch.
  • ✗ Tu a un frère ?✓ Tu as un frère ?The tu form of avoir is as, not a, which belongs to il and elle.
  • ✗ Nous avons au bureau.✓ Nous sommes au bureau.A place is described with être, because avoir means to have.
  • ✗ Ici a une banque.✓ Il y a une banque ici. There is is expressed with il y a, and French has no word to copy English there.
