Common mistakes

  • ✗ Je voudrai un café.✓ Je voudrais un café.The conditional ends in -ais, and -ai belongs only to the future, which English would does not show.
  • ✗ Je pouvrais venir.✓ Je pourrais venir.Pouvoir has the stem pourr- in both the future and the conditional.
  • ✗ Nous aimerons vivre au bord de la mer.✓ Nous aimerions vivre au bord de la mer.Would is expressed by the conditional ending -ions, while -ons would be the future, and English would is a separate word.
  • ✗ Il a dit qu’il viendra.✓ Il a dit qu’il viendrait.After a past verb, English would becomes the French conditional.
  • ✗ À ta place, je partirai.✓ À ta place, je partirais.Advice with in your place uses the conditional, not the future.
