  • Unconfirmed past facts in the news: L’accident aurait fait trois blessés.

Examples

  • Vous auriez dû réserver. You should have booked.
  • Sans toi, je n’y serais pas arrivé.Without you, I wouldn’t have managed.

  • Elle aurait voulu venir. She would have liked to come.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ J’aurais aimer venir.✓ J’aurais aimé venir. After aurais comes the past participle, not the infinitive, as in English would have liked.
  • ✗ Nous aurions allé à Rome.✓ Nous serions allés à Rome.Aller takes être, and the participle agrees with nous, unlike English would have gone.
  • ✗ J’aurais dû partirais plus tôt.✓ J’aurais dû partir plus tôt.After devoir the second verb is an infinitive, as with English should have left.
  • ✗ Tu aurais peut m’appeler.✓ Tu aurais pu m’appeler. The participle of pouvoir is pu, which is easily confused with peut.
  • ✗ Elle serait venu si elle avait pu.✓ Elle serait venue si elle avait pu.With être the participle agrees with the subject, so a woman needs -e.
