Reported speech
To report what someone said, use decir que + clause. If the reporting verb is in the past, tenses usually shift back.
| direct speech | reported (dijo que…) |
|---|---|
| present: «Estoy cansado.» | imperfect: Dijo que estaba cansado. |
| preterite / perfect: «Lo he visto.» | pluperfect: Dijo que lo había visto. |
| future: «Vendré.» | conditional: Dijo que vendría. |
| imperative: «Ven.» | imperfect subjunctive: Me dijo que viniera. |
Other changes
- Pronouns and possessives: «Mi casa» → su casa.
- Time and place: hoy → ese día, mañana → al día siguiente, aquí → allí.
- Questions: preguntar si (yes/no) or preguntar + question word: Me preguntó si tenía hambre / dónde vivía.
- If the reporting verb is present (dice que), tenses don’t change: Dice que está cansado.
Examples
- Ana dijo que llegaría tarde.Ana said she would arrive late.
- Me preguntó si había comido. He asked me if I had eaten.
- El médico me dijo que descansara. The doctor told me to rest.
- Dicen que mañana hará calor. They say it will be hot tomorrow.
- Me dijo que tenía hambre. He told me he was hungry.
Common mistakes
- ✗ Me dijo de que vendría.✓ Me dijo que vendría.Decir takes que with no de. English “said that” has no preposition, but learners add de from verbs like “darse cuenta de que”.
- ✗ Dijo que había llegado mañana.✓ Dijo que llegaría mañana.Future in the past is conditional: llegaría. English “said he would arrive” uses a modal.
- ✗ Dijo me que sí.✓ Me dijo que sí.The pronoun goes before the conjugated verb. English puts “me” after “told”.
- ✗ Dice que mañana llegó.✓ Dice que mañana llegará.The tense follows the time of the event. “Tomorrow” needs the future, not the preterite.
- ✗ Prometió que llamó mañana.✓ Prometió que llamaría mañana. After a past reporting verb the future becomes conditional: llamaría. English uses “would”.
