Dolaylı anlatım (reported speech)
Birinin söylediğini aktarırken fiil genellikle bir zaman geriye kayar; zamirler ve zaman ifadeleri de değişir. Türkçede ise çoğu zaman “-DIğInI söyledi” ya da “dedi ki” ile zaman değişmeden aktarırız.

Sorular ve ricalar
- Sorular düz cümle sırası alır: “Where do you live?” → He asked where I lived.
- Evet / hayır soruları if / whether kullanır: She asked if I was ready.
- Ricalar to ile: He asked me to wait (beklememi istedi).
- say’den sonra kişi gelmez, tell’den sonra gelir: She said that … / She told me that …

- He said he had never been there.Oraya hiç gitmediğini söyledi.
- They asked if we could come earlier.Daha erken gelip gelemeyeceğimizi sordular.
- The doctor told me to rest.Doktor dinlenmemi söyledi.
- He said he would be late.Geç kalacağını söyledi.
Sık yapılan hatalar
- ✗ He asked where did I live.✓ He asked where I lived.Aktarılan soruda soru sırası ve did kalkar: he asked where I lived. Türkçedeki “nerede yaşadığımı sordu” da düz sıradadır.
- ✗ She asked that I was ready.✓ She asked if I was ready.Evet / hayır sorusu aktarılırken if ya da whether kullanılır. Türkçedeki “hazır olup olmadığımı sordu” yapısı that’e çevrilmez.
- ✗ He said me that he was tired.✓ He told me that he was tired.Say’den sonra kişi gelmez; kişiyi söylemek için tell kullanılır: he told me. Türkçedeki “bana söyledi” yapısı say me’ye yönlendirir.
- ✗ Last week he said he would call me tomorrow.✓ Last week he said he would call me the next day.Aktarırken zaman ifadeleri de değişir: tomorrow, the next day olur. Türkçede “yarın arayacağını söyledi” değişmeden kalabilir.
- ✗ She asked me what is my name.✓ She asked me what my name was.Aktarılan soruda özne fiilden önce gelir ve zaman geriye kayar: what my name was. Türkçedeki “adımın ne olduğunu sordu” sırası buna uyar.
