Question words: ne, kim, nerede, nasıl, kaç
Turkish question words do not have to come first: they stand where the answer would be, usually right before the verb: Sen nerede oturuyorsun? (Where do you live?). With a question word you need no mi and no “do”.
| Question word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ne | what | Bu ne? (What is this?) |
| kim | who | O kim? (Who is that?) |
| nerede / nereye / nereden | where / where to / where from | Nereden geliyorsun? (Where are you coming from?) |
| nasıl | how | Nasılsın? (How are you?) |
| kaç / ne kadar | how many / how much | Kaç yaşındasın? Bu ne kadar? (How old are you? How much is this?) |
| ne zaman | when | Tren ne zaman geliyor? (When does the train come?) |
| neden / niçin | why | Neden gülüyorsun? (Why are you laughing?) |
Where does the question word go?
- The question word takes the place of the answer: *Ali nerede çalışıyor?* – *Ali bankada çalışıyor.*
- There is normally no mi and no helper verb like “do”: *Ne istiyorsun?* (What do you want?).
- Question words take case endings like nouns: kimi (whom), kime (to whom), kimin (whose).
- *Nerede / nereye / nereden* split English “where” into where, where to and where from.
Examples
- Sen nerede oturuyorsun?Where do you live?
- Bu çanta ne kadar? How much is this bag?
- Bu akşam ne yapıyorsun? What are you doing this evening?
- Kaç kardeşin var?How many siblings do you have?
- Sınav ne zaman? When is the exam?
Common mistakes
- ✗ Ne sen istiyorsun?✓ Sen ne istiyorsun?English puts the question word first (“What do you want?”); in Turkish ne stands where the answer would be, right before the verb.
- ✗ Ne yapıyor musun?✓ Ne yapıyorsun?English needs “do” in questions; Turkish needs neither a helper verb nor mi when there is a question word.
- ✗ Nerede taşınıyorsunuz?✓ Nereye taşınıyorsunuz?English “Where are you moving (to)?” uses one word; for a direction Turkish needs nereye (where to).
- ✗ Kim çanta bu?✓ Bu kimin çantası?English “Whose bag is this?” has its own word; in Turkish whose is the genitive kimin, and the bag takes the possessive: çantası.
- ✗ Ne kadar yaşlısın?✓ Kaç yaşındasın?English “How old are you?” is not translated word for word; yaşlı means “elderly”, and age is asked with kaç yaşında.
