Common mistakes

  • ✗ J’ai deux journals.✓ J’ai deux journaux.Nouns ending in -al form the plural with -aux, not by adding -s as English does.
  • ✗ Les gâteaus sont bons.✓ Les gâteaux sont bons.Nouns in -eau take -x in the plural, an ending English never uses.
  • ✗ Je prends des buses.✓ Je prends des bus.A noun that already ends in -s stays the same in the plural.
  • ✗ Mon frère a les œils verts.✓ Mon frère a les yeux verts.Œil has an irregular plural, yeux, which has to be memorised.
  • ✗ Ce sont des chevals.✓ Ce sont des chevaux. The plural of cheval follows the -al to -aux rule and not the English pattern of adding -s.
