Examples
- Si hubiéramos salido antes, no habríamos perdido el tren.If we had left earlier, we wouldn’t have missed the train.
- Si lo hubiera sabido, te lo habría dicho. If I’d known, I would have told you.
- ¿Qué habrías hecho tú?What would you have done?
- Ojalá no hubiera dicho eso.I wish I hadn’t said that.
- Si hubiera estudiado más, habría aprobado. If I had studied more, I would have passed.
Common mistakes
- ✗ Si habría sabido, habría venido.✓ Si hubiera sabido, habría venido.English “If I would have known” puts “would have” in both clauses. Spanish uses the subjunctive hubiera in the if-clause.
- ✗ Si hubiera sabido, había venido.✓ Si hubiera sabido, habría venido. The main clause needs the conditional perfect habría venido. The pluperfect había does not express “would have”.
- ✗ Si hubiera estudiado, aprobaba.✓ Si hubiera estudiado, habría aprobado. The imperfect aprobaba does not carry “would have passed”. Use habría + participle.
- ✗ Hubiera comí.✓ Hubiera comido. The participle -ido is required after hubiera. Comí is the preterite.
- ✗ Si no habría llovido, habríamos salido.✓ Si no hubiera llovido, habríamos salido. The if-clause takes hubiera + participle, never the conditional.
