Common mistakes
✗ Woher ihr kommt?✓ Woher kommt ihr?English builds this question with “do” (“Where do you come from?”); German has no do, so the verb itself comes right after the question word.
✗ Wo kommt Anna von?✓ Woher kommt Anna?English can end a question with “from”, but German puts the direction into the question word itself: woher.
✗ Wo gehst du heute Abend?✓ Wohin gehst du heute Abend?English “where” covers both place and direction, but German asks for a destination with wohin.
✗ Was Zeit ist es?✓ Wie spät ist es?English asks “What time is it?”, but German asks how late it is: wie spät ist es? (or wie viel Uhr ist es?).
✗ Was heißt du?✓ Wie heißt du?English “What’s your name?” uses what, but with heißen German asks wie: wie heißt du?
