to be é o verbo mais importante do inglês: corresponde ao “ser” e ao “estar” do português. Serve para nome, profissão, idade, origem, sentimentos e lugares. No presente tem três formas: am, is, are.
| forma completa | forma contraída | |
|---|---|---|
| I | I am | I’m |
| you | you are | you’re |
| he / she / it | he is | he’s |
| we | we are | we’re |
| they | they are | they’re |
Negativa e pergunta
- Negativa: not depois do verbo: I am not tired. She isn’t at home.
- Pergunta: o verbo vai para o início: Are you ready? Is he a doctor?
- Respostas curtas: Yes, I am. / No, he isn’t.
- Idade, fome, sede e frio usam to be, e não “ter”: I’m 30. I’m hungry.
Exemplos

Erros comuns
- ✗ I have 28 years.✓ I am 28 years old.Em português se diz “tenho 28 anos”, mas em inglês a idade se diz com to be: I am 28 ou I am 28 years old.
- ✗ Is very cold today.✓ It is very cold today.O português omite o sujeito em “está muito frio”, mas o inglês exige um sujeito: it is.
- ✗ I am with hunger.✓ I am hungry.O “estou com fome” do português vira um adjetivo em inglês: I am hungry, sem with.
- ✗ My father engineer.✓ My father is an engineer.O inglês não pode dispensar o verbo to be, e profissões no singular levam a / an: is an engineer.
- ✗ You is my best friend.✓ You are my best friend.Com you, mesmo falando com uma só pessoa, a forma é are; is serve só para he, she e it.
