Negating verbs: -me, -ma (gelmiyorum)

Turkish verbs are negated with -me / -ma right after the stem, not with a separate word like “not” or “don't”. In the -iyor present it becomes -mi-, -mı-, -mu-, -mü-: gelmiyorum (I'm not coming).

  • Verbs are negated with -me / -ma inside the verb: *Gelmiyorum* (I'm not coming).
  • Nouns and adjectives are negated with değil: *Hasta değilim* (I'm not ill).
  • There is no helper like English “don't”: *Bilmiyorum* (I don't know).
  • The question comes after the negation: *Gelmiyor musun?* (Aren't you coming?).

Examples

  • Ben et yemiyorum.I don't eat meat.
  • Ali bugün çalışmıyor.Ali isn't working today.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Ben değil biliyorum.✓ Ben bilmiyorum.English “don't know” uses a separate word; in Turkish the negation is inside the verb: bilmiyorum, and değil is only for nouns and adjectives.
  • ✗ Ben anlıyorum değil.✓ Ben anlamıyorum.A verb is not negated by adding değil after it, as with “not”; the negation -ma goes after the stem: anlamıyorum.
  • ✗ Ben okumiyorum.✓ Ben okumuyorum. The vowel of the negation follows 4-way harmony: after the u of oku- it is mu.
  • ✗ Ben beklemeyorum.✓ Ben beklemiyorum. Before -yor the e of -me changes to i: beklemiyorum.
  • ✗ Sen bilmiyorsun mu?✓ Sen bilmiyor musun? In a question the personal ending moves onto the particle: bilmiyor musun.
