  • Pattern: noun in the genitive + place word with a possessive + case: *masanın üstünde* (on the table).
  • The case shows where, where to or where from: *masanın üstüne koy* (put it on the table).
  • With people: *benim yanımda* (next to me), *senin yanında* (next to you).

Examples

  • Ayakkabılar kapının yanında. The shoes are next to the door.
  • Market bankanın karşısında. The supermarket is opposite the bank.
  • Kitabı çantanın içine koydum.I put the book in the bag.
  • Banka postanenin yanında. The bank is next to the post office.
  • Çocuklar annelerinin yanında oynuyor. The children are playing with their mother.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Kedi altında masanın.✓ Kedi masanın altında.English “under the table” puts the place word first; in Turkish the table comes first in the genitive: masanın altında.
  • ✗ Anahtarları masanın üstünde koy.✓ Anahtarları masanın üstüne koy.English “put the keys on the table” uses the same “on” for place and direction; for a movement Turkish needs the dative: üstüne.
  • ✗ Araba evin ön.✓ Araba evin önünde. The place word needs the possessive and the locative: ön-ü-n-de.
  • ✗ Benim yana otur.✓ Benim yanıma otur. The place word takes the person's ending, and “sit next to me” is a movement, so the dative: yanıma.
  • ✗ Kedi kapının arasında. (= between the door and the wall)✓ Kedi kapıyla duvarın arasında. (= between the door and the wall)Like English “between A and B”, arasında needs both things: kapıyla duvarın arasında.
