Building long sentences: -ip, -erek, -ince, -dikten sonra

Turkish texts link many actions into one long sentence: only the last verb carries tense and person, the others are -ip, -erek, -ince, -dikten sonra: Eve gelip yemek yedikten sonra televizyon izlerken uyuyakaldım.

LinkFunctionExample
-ipand (then), same subjectkalkıp giyindim
-erekby, while (how?)gülerek anlattı
-incewhen (also a new subject)ben eve gelince
-dikten sonraafteryemek yedikten sonra
-kenwhileotobüste otururken
-medenwithoutkimseye söylemeden

How do you build the chain?

  • Only the last verb carries tense and person: *Kalkıp giyindim* (I got up and got dressed).
  • -ip links actions with the same subject; when the subject changes, use -ince or -dikten sonra: *Ben gelince sen çıktın.*
  • -ip already means “and”; adding ve doubles it.
  • The actions follow the order of the sentence; split very long chains into two sentences.

Examples

  • Sabah kalkıp kahvaltı yaptıktan sonra işe gittim. In the morning I got up, had breakfast and went to work.
  • Çocuk ağlayarak annesine koştu.The child ran crying to his mother.
  • Eve gelince ayakkabılarımı çıkarıp dinlendim. When I got home, I took off my shoes and rested.
  • Kimseye söylemeden evden çıktı.He left the house without telling anyone.
  • Mektubu okuyup gülerek bana verdi. He read the letter and handed it to me, laughing.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Duş alıp ve çıktım.✓ Duş alıp çıktım.English needs “and” (“I showered and left”); -ip already means “and then”, so ve is not added.
  • ✗ Ben yemek yapıp sen bulaşıkları yıkadın.✓ Ben yemek yapınca sen bulaşıkları yıkadın.English “and” can join different subjects; -ip cannot, so with a new subject use -ince.
  • ✗ Markete gittip ekmek aldım.✓ Markete gidip ekmek aldım.English puts the past on every verb (“went … bought”); -ip takes no tense: gidip.
  • ✗ Kitap okuyunca uyudum. (= while reading)✓ Kitap okurken uyudum. (= while reading)English “while” is -ken; -ince means “when, after”.
  • ✗ Bitirdikten sonra ödevimi çıktım.✓ Ödevimi bitirdikten sonra çıktım.The object belongs before its own verb: ödevimi bitirdikten sonra.
