What should you know?
- Many of these verbs are best learnt as words: *buluşmak* (to meet up), *tanışmak* (to get to know someone), *barışmak* (to make up).
- The partner takes ile: *Ali ile tanıştım* (I met Ali).
- English “each other” and “myself” are usually not translated: the suffix already says it.
Examples
- Hafta sonu eski arkadaşlarla buluştuk. At the weekend we met up with old friends.
- Ali ile bir partide tanıştık.Ali and I met at a party.
- Çocuklar giyiniyor. The children are getting dressed.
- Sonunda anlaştık.We finally agreed.

Common mistakes
- ✗ Biz birbirimizi tanıştık.✓ Biz tanıştık.English “we got to know each other” needs “each other”; tanışmak already means it, so birbirimizi is wrong here.
- ✗ Ayşe'yi partide tanıştım.✓ Ayşe ile partide tanıştım.English “I met Ayşe” has a direct object; with tanışmak the partner takes ile.
- ✗ Ben giyiniyorum kendimi.✓ Ben giyiniyorum.English “I'm dressing myself” uses “myself”; giyinmek is already reflexive.
- ✗ Yarın buluşarız.✓ Yarın buluşuruz.Buluşmak has more than one syllable, so the aorist follows 4-way harmony: buluşuruz.
- ✗ Onlar kucakladı. (= hugged each other)✓ Onlar kucaklaştı. (= hugged each other)Kucaklamak is “to hug someone”; “to hug each other” is the reciprocal kucaklaşmak.
