Common mistakes
- ✗ Bu film beni gülmek yaptı.✓ Bu film beni güldürdü.English “made me laugh” uses “make”; Turkish has no yapmak here, the causative suffix does it: güldürdü.
- ✗ Arabamı yıkadım. (= at the car wash)✓ Arabamı yıkattım. (= at the car wash)English often says “I washed my car” loosely; when someone else did it, Turkish needs the causative: yıkattım.
- ✗ Bebeği uyudurdum.✓ Bebeği uyuttum.After a vowel the causative is the short -t: uyu-t-tum.
- ✗ Bilgisayarı kontrol etdirdim.✓ Bilgisayarı kontrol ettirdim.With etmek, t + d becomes a double t: ettirmek.
- ✗ Öğrenciyi mektup yazdırdım.✓ Öğrenciye mektup yazdırdım.English “I had the student write a letter” has an object; with another object Turkish puts the doer in the dative: öğrenciye.
