Level B2

Purpose: -mek için, -mesi için, -sin diye

Purpose (“to, in order to, so that”) is -mek için: Türkçe öğrenmek için kursa gidiyorum (I'm taking a course to learn Turkish). When the subject changes (“so that you …”), use -mesi için or -sin diye.

MeaningHowExample
to, in order to (same subject)-mek + içinPara kazanmak için çalışıyorum.
so that (other subject)-me + possessive + içinAli'nin anlaması için yavaş konuştum.
so that (spoken)optative + diyeAli anlasın diye yavaş konuştum.
so as not to-meyeyim + diyeUnutmayayım diye not aldım.

Which form when?

  • -mek için: same subject: *Ekmek almak için markete gittim* (I went to the shop to buy bread).
  • -mesi için: a different subject, in the genitive: *Çocukların uyuması için ışığı kapattım*.
  • diye follows the optative (-eyim, -sin, -elim): *Unutmayayım diye not aldım*.
  • English “to” alone is never enough: purpose always needs için or diye.

Examples

  • Türkçe öğrenmek için kursa gidiyorum.I'm taking a course to learn Turkish.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Ekmek almak markete gittim.✓ Ekmek almak için markete gittim.English “to buy” shows purpose with “to” alone; Turkish needs için after the infinitive.
  • ✗ Sen dinlenmek için sessiz oldum. (= so that you could rest)✓ Senin dinlenmen için sessiz oldum. (= so that you could rest)English “so that you could rest” has another subject; then Turkish needs -me with the person: senin dinlenmen için.
  • ✗ Kimse duymamak diye fısıldadı.✓ Kimse duymasın diye fısıldadı.Before diye the optative is used: duymasın (so that nobody hears), not the infinitive.
  • ✗ Geç kalmayım diye erken çıktım.✓ Geç kalmayayım diye erken çıktım.The optative for “I” is -(y)eyim / -(y)ayım: kalmayayım.
  • ✗ Çocuklar anlaması için yavaş konuştum.✓ Çocukların anlaması için yavaş konuştum. Before -mesi için the subject is in the genitive: çocukların anlaması.
