The present tense with -iyor (şimdiki zaman)

The -iyor present describes what is happening right now and also what you do regularly: Türkçe öğreniyorum (I am learning / I learn Turkish). It is the most common tense in everyday speech.

Persongelmek (to come)bakmak (to look)
ben (I)geliyorum (I come / am coming)bakıyorum (I look / am looking)
sen (you)geliyorsunbakıyorsun
o (he / she / it)geliyorbakıyor
biz (we)geliyoruzbakıyoruz
siz (you, plural / formal)geliyorsunuzbakıyorsunuz
onlar (they)geliyorlarbakıyorlar

How do you form it?

  • Take the stem (the infinitive without *-mek / -mak*) and add -(i)yor plus the personal ending; the vowel before *-yor* follows 4-way harmony.
  • If the stem ends in e or a, that vowel changes: *bekle → bekliyor*, *anla → anlıyor*.
  • The o of *-yor* never changes: *geliyor*, never *geliyür*.
  • In a neutral sentence the verb comes last: subject – object – verb: *Ben Türkçe öğreniyorum*.

Examples

  • Ben şimdi Türkçe öğreniyorum.I'm learning Turkish now.
  • Sen ne yapıyorsun? What are you doing?
  • Biz her gün parkta yürüyoruz. We walk in the park every day.
  • O müzik dinliyor.She's listening to music.
  • Onlar sinemaya gidiyorlar. They're going to the cinema.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Ben Türkçe öğreniyor.✓ Ben Türkçe öğreniyorum.English “I am learning” shows the person in “am”; in Turkish the person ending -um must follow -iyor.
  • ✗ Ben koşiyorum.✓ Ben koşuyorum. The vowel before -yor follows 4-way harmony: after o in koş- it is u.
  • ✗ Ben anlaiyorum.✓ Ben anlıyorum.A stem ending in a or e changes that vowel before -yor: anla → anlıyor.
  • ✗ Ben eve gitiyorum.✓ Ben eve gidiyorum.The t of gitmek becomes d before a vowel: gidiyorum.
  • ✗ O okuyür.✓ O okuyor.The suffix -yor never changes its o, whatever the stem vowel.
