Level B1

The passive: -il, -in, -n (yapıldı, okunur)

The passive is a suffix on the verb stem: -il after most consonants, -in after l, -n after vowels: Ev yapıldı (The house was built). Turkish needs no helper like English “was / is”.

Stem ends inSuffixExample
a consonant (not l)-il / -ıl / -ul / -ülyap → yapıldı, yaz → yazılır, gör → görülür
l-in / -ın / -un / -ünbul → bulundu, al → alınır
a vowel-noku → okunur, bekle → bekleniyor

How is the passive used?

  • Tense and person follow as usual: *yapıldı, yapılıyor, yapılacak*.
  • The doer (English “by …”) is tarafından: *Kitap Orhan Pamuk tarafından yazıldı.* In speech it is usually left out.
  • An object with the accusative becomes the subject without an ending: *Kapıyı açtılar* → *Kapı açıldı*.
  • Signs often use the aorist passive: *Sigara içilmez* (No smoking).
