Nominal style: projenin tamamlanması, fiyatların artışı
Like formal English (“the completion of the project”), written Turkish likes to turn sentences into nouns: projenin tamamlanması (the completion of the project), fiyatların artışı (the rise in prices).
| Sentence | Nominal form | English |
|---|---|---|
| Fiyatlar arttı. | fiyatların artışı | the rise in prices |
| Proje tamamlandı. | projenin tamamlanması | the completion of the project |
| Şirket büyüdü. | şirketin büyümesi | the growth of the company |
| Yol yapılacak. | yolun yapımı | the construction of the road |
| Ürün satıldı. | ürünün satışı | the sale of the product |
How do you form the nominal style?
- Pattern: subject in the genitive + verbal noun with a possessive: *fiyatların artışı*, *projenin tamamlanması*.
- If the sentence was passive, the noun stays passive: *başvurunuzun değerlendirilmesi* (the assessment of your application).
- -me is the most common; -iş and -im form fixed nouns: *satış* (sale), *yapım* (construction), *seçim* (election).
- Too many nouns make a text heavy; in speech a full sentence sounds better.
Examples
- Nüfusun artışı yavaşladı.Population growth has slowed down.
- Binanın yenilenmesi bir yıl sürecek. The renovation of the building will take a year.
- Yeni köprünün açılışı yarın yapılacak. The opening of the new bridge will take place tomorrow.
- Seçim sonuçları açıklandı.The election results have been announced.
- Siparişinizin hazırlanması üç gün sürecektir. The preparation of your order will take three days.
Common mistakes
- ✗ Binalar yenilenmesi uzun sürdü.✓ Binaların yenilenmesi uzun sürdü.English “the renovation of the buildings” has “of”; in Turkish the subject of the action takes the genitive: binaların.

- ✗ Yolun yapım iki yıl sürdü.✓ Yolun yapımı iki yıl sürdü.The verbal noun needs the possessive ending: yapımı.
- ✗ Mektubun yazması uzun sürdü.✓ Mektubun yazılması uzun sürdü.The letter is written, it doesn't write; as with English “the writing of the letter”, the noun needs the passive: yazılması.
- ✗ Biletlerin satma başladı.✓ Biletlerin satışı başladı.English “sale” is a fixed noun; in Turkish it is satış, not the bare verb stem with -ma.
