Must and should: -meli, lazım, gerek
Turkish has three ways to say “must” and “should”: the suffix -meli / -malı (gitmeliyim) and the words lazım and gerek with a verbal noun: gitmem lazım (I have to go).
| Form | How | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -meli / -malı | stem + -meli + personal ending | gitmeliyim (I must / should go) |
| lazım | -me + possessive + lazım | gitmem lazım (I have to go) |
| gerek | -me + possessive + gerek | gitmen gerek (you have to go) |
| don't have to | -me + possessive + dative + gerek yok | gitmene gerek yok (you don't have to go) |
| mustn't / shouldn't | -memeli / -mamalı | sigara içmemelisin (you shouldn't smoke) |
What is the difference?
- -meli sounds like advice or duty: *Daha çok su içmelisin* (You should drink more water).
- With lazım / gerek the verbal noun takes the possessive ending of the person: gitmem, gitmen, gitmesi.
- “Don't have to” is gerek yok or lazım değil; -memeli means “mustn't / shouldn't”.
- lazım also works with nouns, like English “need”: *Bana bir kalem lazım* (I need a pen).
Examples
- Bugün erken kalkmalıyım.I have to get up early today.
- Eve gitmem lazım.I need to go home.
- Acele etmen gerek, otobüs geliyor. You need to hurry, the bus is coming.
- Yarın gelmene gerek yok.You don't need to come tomorrow.
- Bize yeni bir buzdolabı lazım.We need a new fridge.
Common mistakes
- ✗ Ben lazım bir kalem.✓ Bana bir kalem lazım.English “I need a pen” has “I” as subject; with lazım the person is in the dative and lazım comes last: bana bir kalem lazım.
- ✗ Ben gitmeye sahibim.✓ Gitmem lazım.English “I have to go” has nothing to do with sahip olmak (to own); obligation is lazım or -meli.
- ✗ Biz çalışmeliyiz.✓ Biz çalışmalıyız.The suffix follows 2-way harmony: after the a in çalış- it is -malı.
- ✗ Onun gelmem lazım.✓ Onun gelmesi lazım.The possessive ending must match the person: onun gelmesi, benim gelmem.
- ✗ Sen çalışmak lazım.✓ Senin çalışman lazım.With lazım the person goes on the verbal noun: (senin) çalışman lazım.
