Can: -ebil / -abil (gelebilirim, gelemem)

“Can” is not a separate word in Turkish but the suffix -ebil / -abil: gelebilirim (I can come). “Can't” is shorter: gelemem (I can't come).

couldn't-emedi / -amadıgelemedim, bulamadık

How do you use -ebil?

  • There is no separate word like “can”: the suffix goes straight onto the verb stem.
  • “Can't” uses -eme / -ama: gelemiyorum (I can't come right now).
  • -ebilir also means “may / might”: *Yağmur yağabilir* (It might rain).
  • Requests: *Bana yardım edebilir misin?* (Can you help me?).

  • Yarın gelebilir misin? Can you come tomorrow?

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Dün anahtarı bulabilirdim. (= I managed to find it)✓ Dün anahtarı bulabildim. (= I managed to find it)English “could” is ambiguous; “managed to” is -ebildi, while -ebilirdi means “could have, would be able to”.
  • ✗ Ben yüzebilmem.✓ Ben yüzemem.“Can't” has its own short form: yüz-eme-m, not yüzebilmem.
  • ✗ Ben bekleabilirim.✓ Ben bekleyebilirim. After a vowel a buffer -y- comes before the suffix, and it follows the e: bekleyebilirim.
  • ✗ Biz kazanebiliriz.✓ Biz kazanabiliriz. The suffix follows 2-way harmony: after the a in kazan- it is -abil.
  • ✗ Bana söyleyebilirsin mi?✓ Bana söyleyebilir misin? In a question the personal ending moves onto the particle: söyleyebilir misin.
