The locative: -de, -da, -te, -ta (where?)

The locative answers Nerede? (where?) and replaces the English prepositions in, at and on. It is a suffix on the noun: evde (at home), okulda (at school), masada (on the table).

Last soundVowelsSuffixExample
vowel or voiced consonanta, ı, o, u-daodada (in the room), arabada (in the car)
vowel or voiced consonante, i, ö, ü-deevde (at home)

voiceless (f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h, p)e, i, ö, ü-temarkette (at the supermarket), saat üçte (at three o'clock)

When does d become t?

  • After the voiceless consonants f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h, p, d becomes t: *parkta*, *sokakta*.
  • Proper names take an apostrophe: *Londra'da*, *Ankara'da*.
  • Written as a separate word, *de / da* means “too”: *Ben de!* (Me too!).

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Ali okul da.✓ Ali okulda. The locative is a suffix written together with the noun: okulda; as a separate word, da means “too”.
  • ✗ Biz parkda bekliyoruz.✓ Biz parkta bekliyoruz. After the voiceless k, the d of the suffix becomes t: parkta.
  • ✗ Londrada yaşıyorum.✓ Londra'da yaşıyorum.Proper names are separated from the suffix by an apostrophe: Londra'da.
  • ✗ Telefon çantade.✓ Telefon çantada. The suffix follows the last vowel: after the a in çanta it is -da.
  • ✗ Ders saat üç başlıyor.✓ Ders saat üçte başlıyor.English “at three” uses a preposition; Turkish puts the locative on the number: üçte.
