The imperative (gel!, gelin!, gidelim!)
The Turkish imperative for sen is simply the verb stem: gel! (come!). For siz (plural or polite) add -(y)in: gelin!; very formal is geliniz.
| Form | How | gelmek | beklemek |
|---|---|---|---|
| you (sen) | stem | gel! | bekle! |
| you (siz) | stem + -(y)in | gelin! | bekleyin! |
| you (very formal) | stem + -(y)iniz | geliniz! | bekleyiniz! |
| negative (sen) | stem + -me / -ma | gelme! | bekleme! |
| negative (siz) | stem + -meyin / -mayın | gelmeyin! | beklemeyin! |
How do you ask politely?
- lütfen (please) makes any imperative softer: *Lütfen bekleyin.*
- With strangers and in shops use the -in form, not the bare stem.
- Forms in -iniz appear mostly on signs and in announcements: *Lütfen sigara içmeyiniz.*
- “Let's …”: stem + -elim / -alım: *Gidelim!* (Let's go!).
