Level C1

Softening what you say: sanırım, -miş olmalı, -se gerek

In discussions and texts you often soften what you say: sanırım (I think), gibi görünüyor (it seems), -miş olmalı (must have), -se gerek (must, probably): Bir yanlışlık olmuş olmalı (There must have been a mistake).

ExpressionMeaningExample
sanırım / galibaI think, probablySanırım haklısınız.
gibi görünüyorit seemsSorun çözülmüş gibi görünüyor.
-miş olmalımust haveAli erken çıkmış olmalı.
-se gerekmust, probably (formal)Toplantı bitmiş olsa gerek.
-diği düşünülüyor / söyleniyorit is thought / said thatFiyatların artacağı düşünülüyor.
bir bakıma / kısmenin a way, partlyBir bakıma haklısın.

How sure are you?

  • -miş olmalı concludes from evidence, like English “must have”; -miş olabilir (may have) is weaker.
  • -se gerek sounds formal: *Yorgun olsa gerek* (He must be tired).
  • Passive forms like düşünülüyor, tahmin ediliyor (it is thought, it is estimated) hide who thinks it; the clause before them takes no accusative.
  • In speech galiba, sanki, bence are enough.

Examples

  • Sanırım bir yanlışlık var.I think there's a mistake.
  • Kapı açık, biri içeri girmiş olmalı.The door is open, someone must have gone in.
  • Bu saatte uçak inmiş olsa gerek. The plane must have landed by now.
  • Ekonominin yavaşladığı söyleniyor. It is said that the economy is slowing down.
  • Planınız bir bakıma mantıklı.Your plan makes sense in a way.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Ali eve gitti olmalı.✓ Ali eve gitmiş olmalı.English “must have gone” uses a participle; before olmalı Turkish uses -miş: gitmiş olmalı.
  • ✗ Ekonominin büyüyeceğini bekleniyor.✓ Ekonominin büyüyeceği bekleniyor.Like English “it is expected that …”, the passive makes the clause the subject, so it loses the accusative: büyüyeceği.
  • ✗ Görünüyor sorun çözülmüş gibi.✓ Sorun çözülmüş gibi görünüyor.English “it seems (that)” comes first; görünüyor comes at the end, after gibi.
  • ✗ Uçak inmeli olmuş.✓ Uçak inmiş olmalı.The order is fixed: first the participle -miş, then olmalı: inmiş olmalı.
  • ✗ Mesajı görmüş olmamalı. (= he can't have seen it)✓ Mesajı görmemiş olmalı. (= he can't have seen it)English “must not have seen” negates the seeing; in Turkish the negation goes on the main verb: görmemiş olmalı.
