O past perfect (tinha feito)
O past perfect mostra que algo aconteceu antes de outro acontecimento passado. Forma: had + particípio, como o “tinha feito” do português.
| antes (past perfect) | depois (past simple) |
|---|---|
| The film had started | when we arrived. |
| I had never seen snow | before I moved to Canada. |
Quando é preciso
- Para deixar a ordem clara: When I got there, the shop had closed (fechou antes).
- Com after, before, by the time, already.
- Se a ordem é óbvia, o past simple basta: I locked the door and left.
Exemplos
- She had already left when I called.Ela já tinha saído quando liguei.
- I realised I had forgotten my passport.Percebi que tinha esquecido o passaporte.
- By the time we arrived, they had eaten everything.Quando chegamos, eles já tinham comido tudo.
- He told me he had worked there for ten years.Ele me disse que tinha trabalhado lá por dez anos.
- We had just sat down when the lights went out.Tínhamos acabado de sentar quando a luz acabou.
Erros comuns
- ✗ When we arrived at the station, the train already left.✓ When we arrived at the station, the train had already left.O português diz “o trem já tinha saído”; para algo anterior a outro passado, o inglês usa had left.
- ✗ She had went home before the rain started.✓ She had gone home before the rain started.Depois de had vem o particípio: gone, e não o passado went.
- ✗ I didn’t know her because I have never met her before.✓ I didn’t know her because I had never met her before.O português diria “eu nunca a tinha visto”; em inglês essa anterioridade exige had, e não have.
- ✗ By the time the doctor arrived, the patient died. (antes de ele chegar)✓ By the time the doctor arrived, the patient had died.by the time indica que a outra ação já estava terminada: had died.
- ✗ We hadn’t never seen snow before that trip.✓ We had never seen snow before that trip.O português diz “nunca tínhamos visto”, e às vezes “não … nunca”, mas em inglês never já é negativo: had never seen, sem not.
