Past perfect
|---|---|
| The film had started | when we arrived. |
| I had never seen snow | before I moved to Canada. |
Quand il est nécessaire
- Pour clarifier l’ordre : When I got there, the shop had closed (il avait fermé avant).
- Avec after, before, by the time, already.
- Si l’ordre est évident, le past simple suffit : I locked the door and left.
Exemples
- She had already left when I called.Elle était déjà partie quand j’ai appelé.
- I realised I had forgotten my passport.Je me suis rendu compte que j’avais oublié mon passeport.
- By the time we arrived, they had eaten everything.
- He told me he had worked there for ten years.Il m’a dit qu’il avait travaillé là-bas pendant dix ans.
- We had just sat down when the lights went out.
Erreurs courantes
- ✗ When I arrived, the film started. (it was already running)✓ When I arrived, the film had started.
- ✗ After I had finished, I have gone home.✓ After I had finished, I went home.
- ✗ I had saw it.✓ I had seen it.Après had on emploie le participe seen et non la forme du passé saw.
- ✗ I hadn’t eat anything.✓ I hadn’t eaten anything.
- ✗ I had never seen snow before I move to Canada.✓ I had never seen snow before I moved to Canada.
