When: -ince, -dığında
For “when, as soon as” Turkish attaches -ince / -ınca / -unca / -ünce or -dığında to the verb stem: Eve gelince ararım (When I get home, I'll call). There is no separate word for “when”.
| Form | How | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| -ince | stem + -ince / -ınca … | gelince, bitince | when, as soon as |
| -dığında | stem + -dik + possessive + -de | geldiğimde, geldiğinde | when (shows the person) |
| -diği zaman | stem + -dik + possessive + zaman | geldiğim zaman | when, whenever |
-ince or -dığında?
- -ince has no personal ending; the subject shows the person: *Ali gelince yemek yeriz.*
- -dığında shows the person on the verb: geldiğimde (when I came), geldiğinde (when you came).
- Both work for the past and the future: *Eve gelince aradım* (When I got home, I called) / *ararım* (I'll call).
- ne zaman is “when?” in questions; as “whenever” it needs -se: *ne zaman gelirsem* (whenever I come).

Common mistakes
- ✗ Ne zaman eve geliyorum, seni ararım.✓ Eve gelince seni ararım.English “when” in a statement is not the question word ne zaman; the time clause is the suffix -ince on the verb.
- ✗ Eve geliyorunca seni ararım.✓ Eve gelince seni ararım.-ince attaches directly to the stem, not to the -iyor form as in English “when I'm coming”: gelince.
- ✗ Ben eve gelincem seni ararım.✓ Ben eve gelince seni ararım.-ince takes no personal ending, unlike English “when I come”; the person is shown by ben.
- ✗ Ben İstanbul'a gittiğinde çok güzeldi.✓ Ben İstanbul'a gittiğimde çok güzeldi.-dığında carries the person: for I it is gittiğimde, gittiğinde means “when you / he went”.
- ✗ Film bitınce eve döndük.✓ Film bitince eve döndük.The suffix follows 4-way harmony: after the i in bit- it is -ince.
