  • -meli means “must” for duty and for guesses, just like English: *Yorgun olmalısın* (You must be tired).
  • -dir in the third person sounds like a confident guess: *Ali şimdi evdedir*.
  • For the past: -miş olabilir (may have) and -miştir (surely has).

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Sen yorgun lazım. (= you must be tired)✓ Sen yorgun olmalısın. (= you must be tired)English “must” for a guess is -meli; lazım only expresses a need.
  • ✗ Çoktan varmıştir.✓ Çoktan varmıştır.The suffix -dır follows the ı before it: varmış-tır.
  • ✗ Ben herhalde haklıdır.✓ Ben herhalde haklıyım.-dir is for the third person; for “I” the normal ending is used: haklıyım.
  • ✗ Bu doğru olabilir değil.✓ Bu doğru olmayabilir.English “may not” puts “not” after “may”; Turkish negates inside the verb: olmayabilir.
