The participle -dik / -ecek: okuduğum kitap (the book I'm reading)

When the noun is not the subject (“the book that I read”), the participle -dik takes a possessive ending: okuduğum kitap. For the future use -ecek: okuyacağım kitap (the book I will read).

Person-dik + possessive-ecek + possessive
benokuduğum kitapokuyacağım kitap
senokuduğun kitapokuyacağın kitap
ookuduğu kitapokuyacağı kitap
bizokuduğumuz kitapokuyacağımız kitap
sizokuduğunuz kitapokuyacağınız kitap
onlarokudukları kitapokuyacakları kitap

How do you build the clause?

  • The subject goes in the genitive before the participle: *Ali'nin okuduğu kitap* (the book Ali is reading), *benim yaşadığım şehir*.
  • -dik covers present and past, -ecek the future.
  • Before a vowel k becomes ğ: okuduğum; after voiceless consonants d becomes t: gittiğim yer.
  • The case of the noun stays on the noun: *oturduğum evde* (in the house where I live).

  • ✗ Ayşe'nin aldığım elbise mavi.✓ Ayşe'nin aldığı elbise mavi. The possessive ending must match the subject: Ayşe'nin aldığı, benim aldığım.
