Negation with değil and the question particle mi

Sentences with “to be” are negated with değil (not), and yes/no questions use the particle mi / mı / mu / mü, written as a separate word. Turkish questions need no word order change and no “do”.

StatementNegative (değil)Yes/no question (mi)
doktorum (I am a doctor)doktor değilim (I am not a doctor)doktor muyum? (am I a doctor?)
hazırsın (you are ready)hazır değilsin (you are not ready)hazır mısın? (are you ready?)
pahalı (it is expensive)pahalı değil (it is not expensive)pahalı mı? (is it expensive?)
öğrenciyiz (we are students)öğrenci değiliz (we are not students)öğrenci miyiz? (are we students?)

How do değil and mi work?

  • değil comes after the noun or adjective and takes the personal ending: *doktor değilim*.
  • mi follows 4-way vowel harmony, is written separately and carries the personal ending: *öğrenci misiniz?*
  • The word order stays the same in a question, unlike English “Are you …?”.
  • değil mi? at the end works like an English question tag: *Güzel, değil mi?* (It's nice, isn't it?)

Examples

  • Bu araba yeni değil.This car is not new.
  • Biz yorgun değiliz. We are not tired.
  • Kahve sıcak mı?Is the coffee hot?
  • Sen öğrenci misin?Are you a student?
  • Bu çay sıcak, değil mi?This tea is hot, isn't it?

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Ben değil öğretmenim.✓ Ben öğretmen değilim.English puts “not” before the noun (“not a teacher”); değil comes after the noun and takes the ending: öğretmen değilim.
  • ✗ Misin sen hazır?✓ Hazır mısın?English starts a question with the verb (“Are you ready?”); in Turkish the word order stays and mi follows the word you ask about.
  • ✗ Bu kitap mi?✓ Bu kitap mı?mi follows 4-way harmony: after the a in kitap it becomes mı.
  • ✗ Yorgunmusun?✓ Yorgun musun? The question particle is always written as a separate word: yorgun musun.
  • ✗ Güzel, değil?✓ Güzel, değil mi?The English tag “isn't it?” is değil mi in Turkish; değil alone is just “not”.
