Narrative tenses: -miş, -di, -iyordu in stories

In fairy tales, stories and novels tenses alternate on purpose: -miş for fairy tales and distance, -di for events, -iyordu and -irdi for background and habits, and the present for suspense.

FormEffectExample
-mişfairy tale, hearsay, distanceEvvel zaman içinde bir padişah varmış.
-dievent, actionKapı birden açıldı.
-iyordubackground, sceneDışarıda kar yağıyordu.
-irdihabit in the pastHer akşam denize bakardı.
present (-iyor)suspense, summariesKapıyı açıyor ve donup kalıyor.

How do the tenses alternate?

  • Fairy tales open with *Evvel zaman içinde, kalbur saman içinde* (Once upon a time) and are told with -miş.
  • Switching from -iyordu (background) to -di (event) builds suspense: *Yağmur yağıyordu. Birden telefon çaldı.*
  • A first-person narrator tells what he lived through with -di; -miş would sound as if he hadn't experienced it.
  • The present appears in summaries and tense scenes: *Roman 1950'de başlıyor* (The novel begins in 1950).

Examples

  • Evvel zaman içinde, bir köyde fakir bir adam yaşarmış.Once upon a time, a poor man lived in a village.
