The impersonal passive: nasıl gidilir? (How do you get there?)
Turkish also uses the passive of intransitive verbs to say what “one / you / people” do: Oraya nasıl gidilir? (How do you get there?), Burada Türkçe konuşulur (Turkish is spoken here).
| English | Turkish | Verb |
|---|---|---|
| How do you get to the station? | İstasyona nasıl gidilir? | gitmek → gidilmek |
| You can't smoke here. | Burada sigara içilmez. | içmek → içilmek |
| People work hard here. | Burada çok çalışılıyor. | çalışmak → çalışılmak |
| You have to get up early. | Erken kalkılmalı. | kalkmak → kalkılmak |
| What do people do here? | Burada ne yapılır? | yapmak → yapılmak |
How does the impersonal passive work?
- The verb is in the third person singular, and there is no subject.
- Verbs without an object (gitmek, oturmak, çalışmak) form it too: *oturulur*, *gidilir*.
- The aorist sounds like a rule or a custom: *Türkiye'de eve ayakkabıyla girilmez*.
- English generic “you” or “people” is often translated this way; *insan* (a person) with an active verb also works: *İnsan yoruluyor*.
Examples
- Havalimanına nasıl gidilir? How do you get to the airport?
- Türkiye'de eve ayakkabıyla girilmez. In Turkey you don't enter a home with your shoes on.
- Bu yemek elle yenir. This dish is eaten with the hands.
- Burada çok güzel yaşanıyor.Life here is very good.
- Kütüphanede yüksek sesle konuşulmaz. You don't talk loudly in the library.
