Niveau B1

can, could, be able to

can hat nur zwei Formen (can, could). Für alle anderen Zeitformen braucht man be able to.

ZeitformBeispiel
GegenwartI can / am able to drive.
Vergangenheit (allgemein)I could swim when I was five.
Vergangenheit (ein Erfolg)I was able to fix it. / I managed to fix it.
ZukunftI’ll be able to help you tomorrow.
present perfectI haven’t been able to sleep.

could oder was able to?

Für eine allgemeine Fähigkeit in der Vergangenheit: could. Für einen konkreten Erfolg: was able to / managed to (es geschafft haben): The exam was hard, but I was able to pass it. In der Verneinung geht beides.

Beispiele

  • Will you be able to come on Friday?Kannst du am Freitag kommen?
  • I managed to find a flat.Ich habe es geschafft, eine Wohnung zu finden.
  • She could read when she was four.Sie konnte mit vier lesen.
  • I haven’t been able to reach him.Ich habe ihn nicht erreicht.
  • She wasn’t able to open the door.Sie konnte die Tür nicht öffnen.

Typische Fehler

  • ✗ I could pass the exam yesterday.✓ I was able to pass the exam yesterday.Für einen einmaligen Erfolg in der Vergangenheit sagt man meist was able to, could bleibt für allgemeine Fähigkeit.
  • ✗ I haven’t could sleep.✓ I haven’t been able to sleep.Zusammengesetzte Zeiten bildet man mit be able to, weil can keine Perfektform hat.
  • ✗ Will you can help me?✓ Will you be able to help me?Can hat keine Zukunftsform, deshalb heißt es im Englischen will you be able to, wo man im Deutschen wirst du können sagt.
  • ✗ I would can do it if I had time.✓ I would be able to do it if I had time.Nach would steht be able to und nicht can, obwohl man im Deutschen ich würde es können sagt.
  • ✗ After three attempts I could finally open the door.✓ After three attempts I was finally able to open the door.Für einen einzelnen Erfolg in der Vergangenheit steht was able to und nicht could.
