Past perfect continuous
Past perfect continuous, geçmişteki bir andan önce bir süredir devam eden eylemi anlatır. Biçimi: had been + -ing. Türkçedeki “-DIr … -(I)yordu” yapısına karşılık gelir (bir saattir bekliyordum).

Ne zaman kullanılır
- Geçmişteki bir ana kadar süre, for / since / how long ile: We had been driving for six hours when the car broke down.
- Önceki bir etkinliğin görünen izleri: His eyes were red. He had been crying.
- Karşılaştırma: I had read the book (bitti) / I had been reading (etkinlik, belki bitmedi).

Sık yapılan hatalar
- ✗ It has been snowing, so the roads were dangerous.✓ It had been snowing, so the roads were dangerous.Geçmişteki bir sonucun öncesindeki süreç past perfect continuous ile söylenir: had been snowing. Has been şimdiye bağlıdır.
- ✗ He had been work at the bank for years.✓ He had been working at the bank for years.Had been’den sonra fiil -ing alır: had been working. Türkçedeki -yordu eki bunu tek kelimede yapar.
- ✗ How long you had been waiting when the train came?✓ How long had you been waiting when the train came?Soruda had öznenin önüne geçer: how long had you been waiting? Türkçedeki “Ne zamandır bekliyordun?” sırası buraya uymaz.
- ✗ We had been driving since six hours.✓ We had been driving for six hours.Türkçedeki “altı saattir” bir süredir ve for ile çevrilir. Since bir başlangıç noktası içindir: since 6 am.
- ✗ I had been reading the whole book, so I knew the ending.✓ I had read the whole book, so I knew the ending.Bitmiş bir sonuç (kitabın tamamı) simple ile söylenir: I had read. Continuous yalnızca etkinliği ve süreyi vurgular.
